Greta Thunberg to travel to Climate Summit in solar panel boat

In-keeping with her strong vegan ethics, Greta is sailing to major UN conferences 

 

 

After previously stating that she might not be able to make the upcoming UN Climate Action Summit, or the Santiago Climate Change Conference (COP25) young climate activist, Greta Thunberg, has revealed that she will be attending the two events.

 

Prior to her exciting announcement, Thunberg said: “It’s on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, and there are no trains going there. And since I don’t fly, because of the enormous climate impact of aviation, it’s going to be a challenge.”

 

But, true to her ethos, Thunberg will be travelling to America in the most sustainable way she can, boycotting carbon-intensive planes.

 

Instead, she will board the Malizia II. The 60-foot yacht is equipped with solar panels and underwater turbines, generating zero-carbon electricity.

 

‘Sailing across the Atlantic’

 

The 16-year-old Swedish activist reportedly spent many months trying to find the most environmentally-friendly means of travel. She Tweeted: “Good news! I’ll be joining the UN Climate Action Summit in New York, COP25 in Santiago… I’ve been offered a ride on the 60ft racing boat Malizia II. We’ll be sailing across the Atlantic Ocean from the UK to NYC in mid-August.”

 

The journey will take two weeks, with Greta accompanied by Malizia II’s skipper Boris Hermann, her father Svante, Pierre Casiraghi, the grandson of Monaco’s late Prince Rainier III and the actor Grace Kelly, along with a film-maker.

 

After travelling to New York and taking part in a number of climate meetings and protests, Greta has said that she intends to travel by bus and train to the annual UN annual Climate Conference in Chile, stopping in Canada and Mexico, as well as other North American countries.

 

‘The window is closing fast’

 

Whilst the passionate schoolgirls’ means of crossing the Atlantic Ocean is, indeed, environmentally-friendly, she agrees that it is inaccessible to the majority of people.

 

Thunberg has stressed that she doesn’t think that all people should stop flying, but that it is imperative that we make the process of travelling better for the planet. She said, “I’m just saying it needs to be easier to be climate neutral.”

 

She wrote on Instagram: “We still have a window of time when things are in our own hands, but the window is closing fast. That is why I have decided to make this trip now.”
