Today, Friday 20th September 2019, 1pm, marks the first day in Global Climate Action Week, taking place the world round until 27th September

Non-profit organisations, Youth Strike for Climate and Friday’s For Future, supported by the Extinction Rebellion, are calling upon anyone and everyone to join in the fight against climate change, by taking part in peaceful protests for action.

Chiefly youth strikes spearheaded by 16-year-old activist, Greta Thunberg, protesters are also calling upon adults and businesses to get involved.

Employees from big corporations including Lush, Amazon US (with over 900 employees having signed an internal petition promising a walk-out over their employer’s lack of action on climate change) Facebook and Google, and celebrities like Willow Smith and Amber Heard, will also be participating in the strikes.

There will be strike events in more than 137 countries around the world. Trade Unions and workers across the globe are organising to support the Global Climate Strike, and Trade Unions for Energy Democracy have also collated some of the statements and union support and action planned across the world.

In a recent interview with Teen Vogue magazine, Thunberg said that we all need to think about the strike from a ‘bigger perspective’.

She said: “If you can’t be in the strike, then, of course, you don’t have to, but I think if there is one day you should join, this is the day.”

In one of her speeches preceding today’s strike, the young environmentalist declared: “This is not a single-generation job. It’s humanity’s job… Let’s all join together, with your neighbours, co-workers, friends, family and go out on to the streets to make your voices heard and make this a turning point in our history.”

To those of you taking part in an action event today – good luck and thank you. If you’re unable to participate in a strike, spread awareness, call others to action, keep eating vegan and encouraging others to do so too, do everything you have in your immediate power to help the climate crisis.
