The broadcaster is going vegan for 24 hours for Viva!’s #GoVegan24 campaign, to bring attention to the  impacts of animal farming on the environment

TV presenter James May is set to go vegan for 24 hours today – World Vegan Day.

As the star of The Grand Tour, and former Top Gear presenter, the well-known broadcaster is backing charity Viva!’s campaign, which launches today for World Vegan Day.

The social media campaign, #GoVegan24 is calling for users to post short videos explaining why they are going vegan.

The aim is that these clips will highlight the environmental impact of livestock farming.

You May Be Surprised’

In his video May says: “I’m doing World Vegan Day and I’m not eating any meat produce for a whole day.

“If you’re into that sort of thing give it a go. You may be surprised.”

May is optimistic about his ability to avoid meat for the day, and has been challenging and encouraging others to follow suit.

In his video, May makes vegan hot dogs and gives them to his electricians – who failed to realise they were meat-free.

May said: “We did that as part of World Vegan Day as an experiment. Things like vegan sausages, vegan bacon, vegan black pudding – I didn’t know you can get that but you can.

“They’re all there to help people make the transition from eating meat to not eating meat, if that’s what you want to do.”

Big Backing

It’s not just May taking part in the challenge, the broadcaster joins a number of other celebrities partaking in the campaign, including presenter Fearne Cotton, singer-songwriter Gabrielle Aplin and fitness bloggers Zanna Van Dijk and Stefanie Moir.

Ferne Cotton says: “For many people who find giving up animal-based products difficult, #GoVegan24 gives them the perfect way of exploring the benefits of veganism.”

Campaigners enthuse that going vegan is the single best thing a person can do to reduce their impact on the environment, with livestock producing one fifth of all greenhouse gases.

Viva! founder and director Juliet Gellatley comments: “The planet and our wildlife is under huge threat from livestock farming and fishing. The natural world is disappearing in front of us. Going vegan can stop this.

“We’re calling on people who might feel going vegan is a step too far to try it for just 24 hours. #GoVegan24 is the perfect way to explore a vegan diet. I’m sure those that do will be pleasantly surprised!”

A single day might not seem likely to help the cause, or like much effort at all, but in 24 hours a person can discover how easy it actually is to go plant-based.

If a day is found to be easy, that day can easily become two, and then a week, and then a lifetime, with countless lives and the planet saved.
